IL1 is activated with almost any challenge to the body, and it then activates many other biological cascades that are involved in maintenance of health and development of disease.

A second patent estate includes genetic variations in the perilipin gene that controls fat metabolism, body weight, and response to dieting. The use of the perilipin genetics technology was exclusively licensed by Interleukin from Tufts University Medical School.
